Optometrist near Chula Vista Talks Computer Vision Syndrome Symptoms

You may not have the same symptoms as another person with computer vision syndrome, but our optometrist near Chula Vista sees a variety of symptoms related to computer use. Some of the most common are:

  • Dry eyes
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Watery eyes

Causes of Computer Vision Syndrome

Most cases of computer vision syndrome can be directly related to the way patients use their computers during the day. Dr. Villa, our optometrist in Chula Vista, sees patients who have symptoms from excess use of tablets or smartphones, but most cases are caused by computer use. A combination of factors combines to create the uncomfortable situation. The most common of these are:

  • Improper distance from the head to the monitor
  • Poor desk seating
  • Poor lighting
  • Glare on the computer monitor
  • Uncorrected vision problems

Almost all of these contributing factors can be helped by changing your work environment, along with putting an emphasis on taking breaks regularly to focus on something besides a screen. These changes can take care of almost all cases, with the exception of those caused by vision problems.

Eye Care and Computer Vision Syndrome

A surprising number of people, especially those in their 40's and older, have a different vision prescription for the distance to their monitor and their normal distance prescription. As a result, they end up sitting closer to or farther away from the monitor than is comfortable. It may seem a simple solution, but eye care for these patients consists of a completely new pair of eyeglasses, exclusively for use when at the computer.

During your regular eye exam, our optometrist can check your prescription for a number of distances. If the prescription is significantly different, Dr. Villa will recommend a separate pair of computer eyeglasses to be worn while working. This simple fix will allow you to sit upright and the right distance away from the screen and may solve many of your computer vision problems.
